Music has always played an important role throughout my life, whether it be playing, listening, or even writing
music for fun!
I've been playing music since I was five years old and have racked up a large number of instruments I, at least
to
some extent, can play.
The first instrument I laid my hands on was the cello. My parents, who are both cellists, thought it would be
fun if
we could be a family of cellists.
The minute my parents corrected my form, however, five year old me had different plans in mind. I decided that I
wanted to play the violin instead, following the footsteps of my grandparents. I ended up playing the violin for
8
years. I took private lessons, played in an orchestra, and played in a few chamber group ensembles.
For a few years during that time, I also learned how to play the flute both in private lessons and in my school
band. When I got to high school, I decided the violin just wasn't for me, and started taking piano lessons
instead.
I picked up the piano quickly, and have played piano ever since.
Over the last few years, I've also taught myself how to play some songs on the guitar and ukelele, and of course
we
can't forget my time in elementary school when I played the recorder!
In terms of listening to music, I mostly enjoy listening to "pop" music - though that's a fairly large genre.
Some
of my favorite artists include Taylor Swift, JP Saxe, BANNERS, Olivia Rodrigo, Noah Cyrus, Niall Horan, Tate
McRae,
and that's just to name a few.
Overall, I think that music plays a crucial role in our society. It helps people express themselves when words
alone
fail, and it's a universal language that can bring people together. I decided to devote a page of my website to
music to show the importance it has in my life, and to share some with the world!
Since learning to play the piano in 9th grade, I've learned to play pieces by a large variety of composers.
In terms of classical music, I'd have to say that my favorite composer is Claude Debussy. Of course I've also
learned pieces by some of the classics: Mozart, Chopin, Brahms, and Pachelbel. On the less classical side of
music,
I've also learned to play various pieces from movie soundtracks. To name a few:
Joe Hisaishi's "One Summer's Day", from Spirited Away; Carter Burwell's "Bella's Lullaby", from
Twilight; Justin Hurwitz's "Mia & Sebastian's Theme", from La La Land.
And in case you were curious, below are two recordings of me performing some pieces!
Petite Suite "En bateau" - Claude Debussy
Waltz in A-flat Major, Op. 39 No. 15 - Johannes Brahms
